McGill Summer Institutes in Global Health

Rehabilitation providers worldwide face paradoxical positions relative to disability: whereas rehabilitation can offer essential support and care to persons with disabilities, rehabilitation can also perpetuate ableism, the oppression of persons with disabilities. Examples of ableism perpetuated by rehabilitation include the reinforcement of discourses of normality and the concentration of power and resources into institutions and professional activities at the expense of initiatives led by the disabled.

I’ll be facilitating a session on Accountability and Disability Justice on June 15th. [Online course]

Global Health Week

The McGill School of Population and Global Health is hosting a four day open-access hybrid series of events on the theme of solutions to global challenges. Please join me and several others on May 19th for a panel co-hosted by the Lancet Commission on Health Professionals.

Description: Public health crises are becoming increasingly complex. The COVID-19 pandemic is indicative of a broader set of acute and chronic threats to health, health equity and well-being in the 21st century. In the face of these challenges, a high premium is being placed on leadership for health that spans the local to global and stretches across sectors and public-private divides. Through a focus on hot topic issues and animated by thought leaders, this forum will consider how fit-for-purpose leadership for health can be nurtured more effectively though health professional training.

Critical perspectives are needed to transform and reframe our understanding of health outcomes for all Canadians. The series will bring together leaders who incorporate Critical Theory to understand health outcomes and experiences in populations who are marginalized. A renowned international panel of speakers will bring knowledge from Indigenous perspectives, lived experience, and expertise in disAbility studies, social justice, and Critical Race Theory. The series is free and open to students, clinicians and academics.

I’ll be presenting on June 7th on Equity and Accountability in Rehabilitation.
